Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! These sewing were made from animal bone some 15,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start. Form follows function! 1/2

Found in the Grotte du Placard à Vilhonneur (Charente).

@ninawillburger these are impressive. (i like making things. i'm thinking about how i would set about making things like these if i didn't have any metal tools; it seems distinctly nontrivial. someone knew what they were doing, and had rocking good engineering skills.)

@ninawillburger Someone did a gorgeous job carving those... but they are, in fact, not quite like modern sewing needles, which have a groove where the eye is to help manage the thread. So there's been a little bit of improvement in the last 15,000 years.

@eyrea also, modern needles have a long slitty eye rather than a perfectly circular eye. I'm often able to take advantage of this by flattening the thread to get it through the eye. Not that this negates @ninawillburger's point that these are *amazingly* similar to modern needles!

I still prefer stainless steel scaled down several magnitudes.
