AP News · Mexico bans junk food sales in schools in its latest salvo against child obesityMexico says a government-sponsored junk food ban in schools has taken effect as the country tries to tackle one of the world’s worst obesity and diabetes epidemics. The health guidelines were first published last fall. They take a direct shot at salty and sweet processed products that have become a staple for generations of Mexican schoolchildren. They include sugary fruit drinks, packaged chips, artificial pork rinds and soy-encased and chili-flavored peanuts. Mexico’s Education Ministry announced that the ban was law as of Saturday. Mexico’s ambitious attempt to remake its food culture and reprogram the next generation of consumers is being watched closely around the world as governments struggle to turn the tide on a global obesity epidemic.

By manipulating existing media, deepfakes can make it appear as though someone is doing or saying something that they never actually did.

Today in Labor History March 31, 1966: There was a two-day boycott of Seattle schools protesting segregation. The protest was organized by the Central Area Civil Rights Committee (CACRC), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The organizers set up eight “Freedom Schools” to educate students who walked out of class. But they had to scramble to come up with dozens more because so many students honored the boycott. The “Freedom Schools” taught African American history and the history of the civil rights movement, among other things.
