We are looking for #hardwareDonations:
If anyone has old servers, drives and equipment and shipping to/in Germany is not a problem, we appreciate your offers.
If you work for a company, we could eventually figure out donation receipts, too.
(Target location is Berlin, pickup in vicinity is not a problem)
Specifically, we could currently make use of SFF-8643 or SFF-8087 cables, if you have some spare
@Codeberg if shipping a "blade" server from France to Germany, I could offer this one. https://www.leboncoin.fr/ad/ordinateurs/2606626416
I hope the french wording does not prevent from reading the specs. Otherwise I can translate.
@LaurentB45 Thank you, we'll check it out. We have some offers that are closer to us, so we'll probably get in touch with them first.
@Codeberg What do you mean with “old hardware”? You wouldn’t want an old 2.5" HDD with only 1 TB capacity, made by Toshiba in 2018, right? (That’s the most modern spare hardware I have )
No cables, though
@dirk If you have no use for them, we might be able to use them for backups.
But feel free to keep them, if you still have a use for them.
@Codeberg Yeah, it’s laying around in my hardware drawer. I just can’t tell right now if it’s still working and I have no way to remove data from it. I’ll check tomorrow.
It’s a Toshiba MQ01ABD100 and I misread the manufacturing date, it’s from 2016 but should be in good condition because it’s so long not in use that I have no idea where I got it from (I think, an old PlayStation 4 Pro but can’t tell for sure).
@Codeberg Just came home. I checked the HDD this afternoon and it’s working fine. See SMART data. If you’re still interested, just drop me a quick note with your shipping address somewhere
@Codeberg what is your definition of old? Would a Xeon E5-2620 v4 based system with 64 GB RAM be within your definition?
@ccellar The CPU sounds rather old. We have ideas for running CI on sunny days where older hardware would be acceptable.
Do you have details about the memory? If it can be used to upgrade our systems, it might be worth a consideration.
@Codeberg would have to boot up this thing first. But to be honest I would not like to rip this machine apart.
@ccellar If you have physical access, some part number etc would do.
Are you limited to x86 machines?
@Codeberg do you accept chromebooks with mrchromebox firmware installed
@max@social.theycallhermax.tech Hmm, we're not in direct need of such devices, I actually didn't knew about this project. I started to read and it sounds exciting to test one of these :)

@max hey there, since the Codeberg office starbook broke, there is now an actual use for such a device - in case there is one spare :) ~fnetX
@Codeberg I'm asking at work to donate some servers. We have 1-3 720XD left. But there are still some details to clarify with my bosses.
@miggi This sounds great. The 720 generation can still be useful for us, especially for backups and CI builds. We have two R730 up and running currently.
Let us know if you need any details from us. We are based in / near Berlin.
