I have been reading (and hearing) about how reading or not reading affects one's brain since Marshall McLuhan, 50 years ago for me though he was writing earlier, before I could read. Daniel Boorstin's 1962 The Image is a classic, as is Neil Postman's 1985 Amusing Ourselves to Death.

If you are interested in the effects of reading there are a number of good books on this.
