This is NOT an invitation to argue about it, but I really can’t emphasize enough the degree to which *some* form of QTing would be helpful on this platform, and to some users it’s next to crucial.

Seen people say it isn’t conducive to conversations and while I’m not claiming my user experience is universal, I couldn’t disagree more. I’ve found it *crucial* to conversations and have had great ones that way.

I understand why people are leery about it, I really do understand the logic in not having that feature, but I think it’s important, if you’re going to argue for why it shouldn’t be here, to really grok how it gets used for way more than dunks, and to also get that people aren’t necessarily trying to just make Mastodon into Twitter.

Arguing for something *like* the ability to quote tweet isn’t necessarily arguing for the exact same feature. It’s suggesting that maybe there could be a way to find some form of it that works better for Mastodon.

I don’t know what that would look like, but I think the conversation is worth having.

The idea of making it something you can opt into or choose when to use sounds to me like a great place to start looking for a happier medium, especially because I can imagine posts—really personal stuff, say—that I wouldn’t necessarily want people to be able to QT.

@dynamicsymmetry "really personal stuff" that you are posting on social media? 🤔

@mwehle If you don’t understand why I might feel comfortable sharing something about my life while at the same time not really feeling comfortable with someone grabbing it and adding their own stuff to it I’m not sure how to explain it to you

@mwehle @dynamicsymmetry How many times have you seen somebody on Twitter mention being trans or gay or even just Democrat and then seen some right wing hater QT them encouraging their fans to attack the original tweeter?
(Hint, if you haven't, you've done a better job of blocking haters than most of us, and you haven't been the target.)
