I have 200 pages left in GO TO THE WIDOW-MAKER and it is abundantly clear to me that James Jones was a much smarter and bolder chronicler of 20th century toxic masculinity than stabby gasbag Norman Mailer. Jones was often falsely pegged as a "bad writer" simply because he wrote bluntly in close omniscient narration in the manner that men thought. The full scope of his talent often eluded the very snobs who had anointed him. I really dig how gutsy he is in depicting ugliness.
If you aren't aware of James Jones's life, you'll probably see Carol Abernathy in GO TO THE WIDOWMAKER as an over-the-top virago stereotype. But she is a clear representation of the tyrannical Lowney Handy, an older married woman whom Jones had an affair with and who was incredibly controlling and who set up (with Jones's money) what was quite possibly the worst writer's colony of the 20th century. Despots come in all forms.
