The rich techbro crowd's obsession with their "intelligence" (i.e., some of them being good engineer or coders with an analytical, positivistic understanding of the market economy and mass psychology) while their decisions show an obvious lack of emotional intelligence (or " connected" intelligence, i.e. the ability and willingness to transcend the subject-object binary in their thinking) is a hallmark of what I like to call the Spiritual Patriarchy (i.e. a time when a certain idea of masculinity, capitalist masculinity, its "yang" values and abilities, are socially overvalued and any "softer", more emotionally intelligent and connected "yin" alternative repressed).

One of the ways social ecology helps us build a better economy (if you think of economy as the field concerned with thr logistics of meeting people's needs, as everyone should) is the understanding that every form of value extraction has a social and ecological cost that needs to be offset.

For example, you could build an alternative to AirBnB (because people will always be looking for places to sleep) where every space is linked to a local social project that gives power to the people building a more resilient neighbourhood, be it a soup kitchen, a community garden or a queer youth centre, with a sliding scale based on e.g. how vulnerable that neighbourhood is determining how much of the rent gets redistributed to the community to help offset the "AirBnBification" effect or whatever you want to call it.

Hi! I'm Ajay, passionate about #permaculture, #bioregional organizing, and building resilient communities through #technology. I work on tools for community resilience and sustainable living, while exploring ways to integrate ecological design with social innovation. Interested in #OpenSource, #Sustainability, and collaborative approaches to addressing environmental challenges. Looking forward to connecting with like-minded folks here! #SocialEcology #RegenerativeCulture #Community #Introduction

3) Much of how we understand reality is structured by metaphor and metaphor begins in experience (insert Lakoff & Johnson here). If our experience is limited to liberal, capitalist relations, then so will our metaphors be (insert Bookchin here). My hunch is that this is where phrases like "social capital" come from and why they bother me. I've heard permaculture people describe the growth of trees as the tree reinvesting the profits of photosynthesis to expand production for next season. Systems theory people describe ecosystems in terms of corporate structure, with hierarchies and division of labor. "Natural capital," "ecosystem services," the list goes on. Developing an ecological sensibility requires developing ecological *human to human social relations* and, with that, new metaphors.

As global warming accelerates, causing food supply issues, we can expect more people around the world to migrate.

We can expect states to take harsher measures to maintain control over their borders.

We can expect surveillance to increase, and more punitive punishments to be doled out, to keep those whose lives will become worse and worse in line.

This is a good time for an #introduction I suppose.

I'm an #educator from #stl that firmly believes in decentralized self organization, such as #anarchism, #socialecology, #solarpunk, or #librarysocialism.

Also I'm a big #urbanism and #foss nerd and #ebike commuter. I'm very involved in the local #freestore and trying to help organize larger #postcapitalist ventures.

This is your reminder that if you want to build a world without oppression and domination, you'll have to build your own organizations that are as free from oppression and domination as possible given the world we live in.

This could be a book club, a sewing circle, a bike kitchen, a weekly potluck group, a gardening club, or a host of other groups. Start building them locally and then start confererating them together.

What institution are you building in your local area? Are these institution working with other institutions?

We need local institutions working on a lot of issues, and we need to confederate them together to tackle larger problems.

I'm volunteering at a local bike co-op, and I'm trying to build relationships with a local bookstore and other bike based organizations.

Thinking about all the institutions we should be building, and how far behind we are on the work.

It's silly most neighborhoods don't have a little tool library, with relationships with bigger tool libraries on the town, city, and regional level.

Various types of coops need to be forming and expanding. A lot of work needs to be done on this.

Regardless of who wins this election, (that I hope Dems win) the work we will have to do stays the same. Organize your communities, and learn how to cooperate with each other by practice.

Working together without oppressive systems is a skill you have to develop over time. Find a few people, build small scale examples of a better world, and give advice to those who see what you have done and want to replicate it.

I really want to start a very local reading group, with a focus on #socialecology , and I'm looking for some advice.

I would like to start with an essay rather than a whole book. Would anyone suggest a good, introductory essay? If not, I'll just go with the book "Remaking Society."

Where do you recruit for reading groups? My apartment building is so anti-social.

How do you recruit? Do you put up fliers?
